Consumer Credit Counseling

Why You Should Check Your Credit? Given the high volume of identity thefts, it is important to periodically check your credit report to make certain no one is using your identity. Check your credit report for inaccuracies. The credit bureaus are required to investigate and correct consumer credit counseling. Also look for items that could lower your credit rating, such as open lines of credit and credit cards you never use. Keep in mind that when borrowing money, lenders look at how much you owe as well as how open debt you have available.

If you aren't disciplined enough to create a workable budget and stick to it, can't work out a repayment plan with your creditors, or can't keep track of mounting bills, consider contacting a consumer credit counseling service. Your creditors may be willing to admit reduced payments if you enter into a debt repayment plan with a reputable organization. In these plans, you deposit money each month with the credit counseling service. Your deposits are used to pay your creditors according to a payment schedule developed by the counselor. As part of the refund plan, you may have to agree not to apply for, or use, any additional credit while you're participating in the program.

Not checking your credit is very risky! Don't be left in the dark when it's time to apply for a mortgage or car loan. Most lenders now rely on credit scores over 700 to give you the best rates. If your credit is inaccurate, negative or obsolete- you'll pay more. Protect your credit and keep an eye on it for any changes not created by you.
